Need to be perfect
One of the things that shocked me when I went home this time was the nations need for all girls to be 'perfect'. In between me stuffing myself with food *gasp*, I chilled out in front of the tv and surfed through the 75 channels we get through cable. There were perhaps 10 home shopping channels, and all were selling this special new bodice that will instantly transform your body shape in seconds. Slimming pills are apparently not fast enough... we now need INSTANT results. Are they crazy? Taiwan is a tropical country when 2 months of the year the
temperature is well over 30 degrees! But in the name of perfection... they are selling like hot cakes.
I then flick to the news channel, it tells me there is this 'celebrity' (who got famous by having had so many plastic surgery) who is using the Chinese new year holiday to go over to Korea to have more surgery done. In total, she has had 34 separate surgery done to her face alone. Individual, extreme case you say... well, apparently during the Chinese new year holiday all the plastic surgeries are open and are so busy, they only have time to do surgery after surgery, no time for consulting. The news also tells me how Taiwan's plastic surgery is almost asadvanced as Korea and will soon be just as cheap. (In Korea, there's a street that just has plastic surgeries.. 165 in total... on ONE street.)
I then surf to the chat show channels. Most are filled with relationship talk shows, and shows that predict your character and love fortune in the new year. Star signs, names, numbers, tarot cards.... every way to see when and how you will meet the love of your life. Oh and there are obviously ways to improve your love fortune... you can buy this... wear that... all these will improve your chances in love. Then there are other talk shows where guys are brought on to tell us what they look for in girls... Nice legs, big boobs, thin. Wait, big boobs AND skinny?! For 99% of the girls that's basically impossible. Boobs are fat, in the ideal world we can choose where the fat goes... but we don't live in that world. Hence the booming plastic surgery industry.
I move away from the tv. I go to the department store. I venture into the underwear section to pick up some bras. I finally spot some I kind of like, but unfortunately like 80% of the bras there (20% are super expensive western imports) they are extremely padded. I ask the lady behind the counter if i can have some none padded ones. She takes one look at my boobs and said "sorry, for your size we only have padded." and proceeded to give me a look that basically said "You freak, for your boob size why would you want NO padding?!"
I have small boobs, I shall have padded bra or surgery to correct it. If I am overweight, I shall need one of those bodice to correct my body shape before I put on a dress. If I have fat legs, I shall have somebotox injected to make them slimmer. What am I doing all these for? Why is this false 'perfection' imposed on me?! Oh yes, I NEED to be attached. God forbid I shall be single or unmarried for too long.

Too bad most of us forgot about the true meaning of perfection.. Nowadays when you use the word 'perfect', people immediately think botox, plastic surgery or 'ohh like that (skinny) actress from [insert reality show title here]!'.
Makes you feel like you don't belong in this world anymore, huh? Crazy, what people do to themselves sometimes..
