Here is my dissertation title...I am open to suggestions on maybe a better title/topic, and books that I may find useful!
4th year dissertation title
The dissertation is going to be based on the shift in environmental art from the Geometric (
Michael Heizer) to the Entropic (
Robert Smithson) to the Systemic (
Olafur Elliasson or
Peter Fend).
Walter De Maria was the first person to use the term 'land art' and apart from him, most artists don't describe their work using such a title, as it is unclear what the title covers. However
De Maria was one of the first artists who had completed a relevant Land Art works during the early 60s and
Heizer joined him towards the late 60s. It was not until the early 70s that Robert Smithson created his first real earthwork. This dissertation will discuss the reason behind why land art was created in the first place, and how different generations of artists choose to interpret nature and the environment.
"The subject is architecture, the result is sculpture."

Michael Heizer
I am also looking into
Richard Long as I think his stuff is pretty interesting too! I just have to try to get my head round all the theoretical stuff....
